The Black Friday Thing!
Amazing, time has opened its wings, taken flight and its Black Friday 2014; where did the time go. The day after Thanksgiving people and retailers are in sync, the consumers line up around the corners ,the retailer lines up the merchandise at huge discounts for the great exchange. How did it all start, why are so many around the country are willing to wait hours to get a discount on a product on this day.
But the truth is that Black Friday owes its name to the Philadelphia Police Department, which did not have profitability in mind. One thing to remember is that, long before the rest of us started calling it Black Friday, retailers hoped to start the holiday shopping season with a bang by offering “can’t miss” deals right after Thanksgiving. (Note: These days, “holiday shopping season” can begin way before Turkey Day.) People being people, they have long stormed stores, caused traffic jams and been generally terrible to one another in an effort not to miss these deals.
In the middle years of the twentieth century, the scene was often particularly bad in Philadelphia, where the annual Army-Navy football game was regularly played on the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Lots of cars, lots of traffic, lots of chaos. Sound familiar?
So at some point in the 1950s or 1960s — some put the date exactly at 1966— the Philadelphia Police Department started to refer to the day after Thanksgiving as “Black Friday,” with the unrealistic hope that people would find the whole shebang distasteful and opt out of the collective consumer madness. At a minimum, it was a derisive way to describe an unpleasant day in the life of a Philly cop.
So somewhere along the way some marketing wizard came up the idea of providing endless great deals on the day after Thanksgiving to so to speak ” killing two birds with one stone”. The consumers Christmas shopping and retailer to recoup sales lost from those hot summer days droughts at the register. They got real creative in terms of getting consumer to the gate with 4 am, midnight shopping starts and even Thanksgiving on-line only deals.
This tradition feeds some interesting characters not usually caught in the same bed together. First is the retailers, the banks, credit card companies,cabs and local city buses & trains,state & local revenues and the consumer. There may be some others I overlooked but, the picture I want to frame here is that the consumer becomes to the big loser in my opinion.
After putting 1000’s working hours
After putting in 1000’s working hours leading up to this day, they eat turkey on Thursday and early Friday join huge line or hours waiting for the retailer to open the doors for a best very limited super deals. The mad dash has cause serious injury and some fights in the past. The amount of debt racked up between that day and December 24 is off the charts. Most of these items will be a forgotten memory once human nature kicks in after a few months. Year after year this ritual continues and I just wonder if just some of those folks would channel that energy and drive to get the best deal, would consider putting that effort in a home base business.
So many have heard of the opportunities from Amway to Avon, greetings cards to financial services, plus so much more. However, people remember the worst about this business model and STOP dead in their due to FEAR OF LOSS. Countless people are losing countless dollars of their future earnings on gadgets and things for a short fix to their state of mind. The chance of building a successful opportunity is a remote concept, because frankly it is not a quick fix.
Hope I do not sound like
Hope I do not sound like I am against people spending their hard earned money buying their hearts desires, just think its time people see the light throughout the tunnel and not just at the end. There is MORE to the grind of living paycheck to paycheck, not being able to travel, struggle to develop your opportunity due to a lack of information and trust/fear. I recommend going through this entire blog site and explore the contents, in the end I guarantee you would have gain some new perspective on WHAT you can do to increase value in the market place today.
